China’s STAR50 index fell 40 percent, the Nasdaq had its worst month since March 2025, and gold hit a one-year low. Indian benchmarks rose, but mid caps, the rupee and foreign flows are under pressure.

The week the safe assets stopped being safe.

On Friday, 30 October 2026, Intel lost 29% of its value in a single day, its worst since 1974. A day earlier, Google’s parent company had its worst day since it listed in 2004. Gold, the asset your parents told you to buy when the world gets scary, fell to a one-year low. Silver dropped below $50. Bitcoin slid after the largest crypto hack in history.

And the Indian stock market? It went up.

If you are a student, a fresher in your first job, or someone thinking about switching into finance, two questions probably crossed your mind this week. Is this 2008 again? Shanghai’s STAR50 index, home to the country’s AI chip and semiconductor leaders, has fallen about 40 percent from its July high in under four months, wiping out roughly $480 billion in market value, according to a Reuters analysis published on 26 October 2026.

Here is what the numbers look like as of Friday, 30 October 2026:

The CSI 300, China’s main blue-chip index, is about 20 percent below its June peak. A fall of 20 percent or more from a recent high is the textbook definition of a bear market.

The CSI 300 has now dropped for 12 straight weeks, its longest losing streak since the index was launched in 2005. It lost about 8.5 percent in October alone, its worst month in more than a decade.

At the peak in July, STAR50 stocks traded at nearly 250 times their trailing earnings. Even after the crash, they trade at around 100 times, compared with roughly 30 times for the Nasdaq 100 in the US.

AI-related stocks had grown to 42 percent of China’s total market value and 57 percent of daily trading turnover across mainland and Hong Kong shares (Goldman Sachs figures cited by Reuters). When those stocks fell, almost every portfolio in the country felt it.

Retail investors drive about 90 percent of daily trading in China, against 20 to 25 percent on the New York Stock Exchange (HSBC data cited by CNBC). This was a crash paid for mostly by ordinary households.

The Stocks That Fell Hardest

Robot maker Unitree saw its share offering oversubscribed about 8,000 times in August. The stock has since halved.

GPU makers Moore Threads and MetaX, which jumped roughly 400 and 700 percent on their market debuts, have each lost about half their peak value since July.

Optical module maker Eoptolink fell about 14 percent on 30 October and is down roughly 50 percent for the month.

Why did it happen? Market participants point to no single trigger. Four forces worked together:

Profit doubts. Investors stopped believing that huge spending on AI models, chips, and humanoid robots would turn into real profits any time soon.

Stretched valuations. Paying 250 times earnings only works if earnings grow explosively. When growth looks ordinary, the price has to fall.

US export restrictions. New and threatened curbs on Chinese chips, components and data-centre equipment clouded the long-term outlook for suppliers.

A weak home economy. A long property slump and cautious consumers mean there is no domestic boom to fall back on.

Beijing has tried to catch the falling knife. State-backed funds, known as the “national team,” poured about $19 billion (128.7 billion yuan) into nine exchange-traded funds in the week to 24 October, their heaviest buying since the April 2025 tariff shock, and were estimated to have bought as much as $25.5 billion in stocks in the final week of the month. It has not stopped the slide. Morgan Stanley expects offshore Chinese stocks to fall another 10 to 15 percent before they find a floor.

One detail worth noting: Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index actually rose about 1.5 percent on 30 October while mainland indexes fell. Investors are becoming selective, not abandoning China wholesale.

Sources: Reuters analysis via Geo News, 26 Oct 2026, Coinpaper market report citing Reuters, 30 Oct 2026, ORA dispatch citing CNBC, 22 Oct 2026

The US Stock Market Crash: Wall Street’s Worst Week Since June

Wall Street caught the same fever this week. On Friday, 30 October 2026, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.86 percent, and the S&P 500 fell 1.82 percent, the worst single day for both since June. The trigger was not a bank failure or a war. The index is now about 7.8 percent below the record it set on 6 October. The S&P 500 is about 3 percent off its peak.

The Dow actually gained 1.5 percent for the month. This was a tech crash, not a crash of everything. Technology and communication services were the only two sectors to fall in October, according to Truist’s chief investment officer Keith Lerner.

Wall Street’s fear gauge, the VIX, jumped almost 13 percent on Friday to 19.42.

What set it off

Alphabet (Google) missed earnings. The stock plunged more than 12 percent on Thursday, 29 October, its worst day in over 20 years, heading for a roughly $500 billion drop in market value, the biggest in its history. Investors were spooked by heavy AI infrastructure spending and pressure on free cash flow.

Amazon missed too. It spent about $77 billion on property and equipment in the July to September quarter, more than double the $35 billion a year earlier. Its free cash flow over the past 12 months is now an outflow of more than $42 billion, the deepest cash burn in its history. Shares fell about 2 percent on Friday after a steeper premarket drop.

Intel had its worst day since 1974. The stock sank roughly 29 percent after its fourth-quarter revenue outlook of $15 to $16 billion fell short of expectations. CEO Lip-Bu Tan warned that a memory-chip shortage has pushed PC prices up and customers are now delaying purchases.

The chip rout spread. Nvidia fell 4.2 percent, AMD about 11 percent, Broadcom 5.5 percent, and Micron 5.3 percent. A closely watched index of chipmakers sank 7.2 percent. In Asia, SK Hynix lost more than 7 percent, and South Korea’s Kospi fell about 3.5 percent.

Smaller internet stocks got hammered. Reddit fell about 24 percent after weaker user numbers and a soft forecast, Roblox dropped 16 percent and Pinterest 6 percent.

SpaceX, now a listed company, has lost more than $400 billion in value since 6 October, slipping below a $2 trillion valuation.

The macro backdrop made it worse.

The US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady this week in a split vote, but its preferred inflation gauge rose in September, and two Fed officials said on Friday that rates need to go higher. Markets now expect a rate hike in December. Higher rates hurt expensive growth stocks the most.

The 10-year US Treasury yield sits near 4.93 percent.

Oil is rising on signs the US may resume strikes on Iran after next week’s midterm elections. Brent crude is near $112 to $115 a barrel, and WTI is above $100. Exxon and Chevron touched record highs on Friday.

Is this the AI bubble bursting in the US? Not yet, on the evidence. Since the bull market began in October 2022, the S&P 500 has gained about 111 percent and semiconductors more than 380 percent. Against that, tech’s current 10 percent pullback is in line with earlier dips in this cycle, Truist’s Lerner noted, while warning that a further 2 to 8 percent downside for tech is possible. What has changed is that investors are no longer rewarding AI spending automatically. They want to see returns.

What to watch next week: US midterm elections on Tuesday, 3 November; earnings from AMD, Arm and Qualcomm; and the US jobs report on Friday, 6 November.

Sources: Yahoo Finance live market report, 30 Oct 2026, CNN Business, 30 Oct 2026

Gold, Silver & Crypto: Why The “Safe” Assets Fell Too

Here is the part that confuses most beginners. Gold normally plays that role. Three things broke the pattern this week:

Margin calls. When tech stocks crashed, traders who had borrowed to invest needed cash fast. Gold is easy to sell, so it was the first thing they sold.

Rate-hike bets. US GDP grew 3.4 percent in the third quarter, and inflation rose in September. Markets now expect the Federal Reserve to raise rates in December and into early 2027. Higher rates make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive.

Oil is the new fear trade. The war with Iran has kept oil high. Analysts say oil and the US dollar are currently doing the safe-haven job that gold usually does.

Gold is now trading about 13.5 percent below its 200-day moving average of roughly $4,490 an ounce, a sign of strong downward momentum. Some analysts expect a test of $3,800 before any recovery. Others see the drop as a technical move and a long-term entry point. Nobody knows which is right, which is exactly why this blog does not tell you to buy or sell.

Crypto’s own crisis

Bitcoin’s fall was not only about AI. On Thursday, 29 October, Binance confirmed a hack with an estimated impact of about $6.3 billion, the biggest crypto heist in history. Blockchain analysts linked it to North Korean hackers. Binance said it would cover all user losses from its own reserves, and about $3 billion of stolen assets had been frozen on-chain by Friday. Crypto-linked stocks such as Coinbase, Robinhood and Strategy fell more than 6 percent in premarket trading.

So is everything down? Mostly, yes, for the week. Stocks, gold, silver, Bitcoin and copper all fell. But oil, energy stocks like Exxon and Chevron, the US dollar and bonds rose. Money did not vanish. It moved.

Sources: Kitco News, 30 Oct 2026, Mining.com, 30 Oct 2026, Yahoo Finance, 30 Oct 2026, CNBC TV18 via TradingView, 30 Oct 2026

Why The Crash Happened: The AI Maths Stopped Adding Up

The crash was not caused by AI failing. It was caused by a simple accounting problem: the biggest companies are now spending more cash on AI than their businesses generate, the smaller companies have borrowed heavily to build capacity, and the profits that were supposed to pay for all of it have not shown up yet. When that gap becomes visible in quarterly results, investors stop funding it. That is what happened in the last week of October 2026.

A one-line definition: AI infrastructure spending is front-loaded (you pay for the data centre now) and the returns are back-loaded (customers pay you over years). A crash happens when investors decide the gap between the two is too wide, or will take too long to close.

1. The big spenders have crossed the line where spending exceeds cash flow

For years, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle paid for their data centres out of the cash their businesses produced. That stopped in 2026. Research group Epoch AI, working from SEC filings, found that these five companies’ operating cash flow has been growing about 23 percent a year while their cash capex has been growing about 70 percent a year. The two lines crossed around the third quarter of 2026, meaning the group as a whole now spends more on infrastructure than it earns from operations.

Company

Capex versus operating cash flow

Evidence from the latest quarter (July to September 2026)

Oracle

Capex already about twice operating cash flow

Raised $43 billion of debt and $5 billion of equity in its last fiscal year; S&P cut its credit rating to BBB-, one notch above junk, in July 2026

Amazon

Crossing now

Spent about $77 billion on property and equipment against about $42 billion of operating cash; 12-month free cash flow is negative $42 billion

Alphabet

Expected to cross around early 2027

Free cash flow negative $9.07 billion in the quarter; raised $84.75 billion in equity in June 2026

Meta

Expected to cross around late 2027

Free cash flow about $1.5 billion on $64.6 billion of revenue; reportedly raising $95 billion for AI

Microsoft

Not expected to cross before 2028

Free cash flow positive; CFO says it will stay that way

When cash runs short, companies borrow. J.P. Morgan Asset Management puts hyperscaler bond issuance at about $17 billion in 2024, $109 billion in 2025 and $194 billion in the first half of 2026 alone. FactSet calculates that new debt funded 9 percent of hyperscaler capex in fiscal 2024 and 32 percent by mid-2026, taking the group’s total debt to roughly $700 billion. Goldman Sachs expects a record $420 billion of hyperscaler borrowing in 2027.

Reading the chart: borrowing that took a full year in 2025 was exceeded in six months of 2026, and Goldman Sachs expects 2027 to more than double again. This is the funding gap in one picture.

The bond market noticed. Apollo data cited by Reuters shows the cushion behind each new hyperscaler bond (the cover ratio) fell from about 5 times in February 2026 to about 2 times by July. The Bank of England’s July financial stability report warned that rising AI-related debt had become a new channel through which a loss of confidence in AI could hit the wider financial system.

2. Nvidia is a different case: the seller that has become a lender

Nvidia is not spending more than it earns. It is the company everyone else is paying. In its May to July 2026 quarter, it reported revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106 percent on a year earlier, and net income of $58 billion. Its stock still fell 4.2 percent on Friday and is about 12 percent below its high, for two reasons that have nothing to do with its own spending.

Customer concentration. Three hyperscalers provided 54 percent of Nvidia’s revenue in the latest quarter. Two direct customers accounted for 22 and 14 percent of revenue in its 2026 fiscal year. Five clients make up 70 percent of what it is owed. If those customers slow their 2027 spending, Nvidia’s growth slows with them.

Circular financing. This is the phrase investors used all week. A chip supplier invests in a customer, the customer uses that money to buy the supplier’s chips, and both report growth. Nvidia has invested $30 billion in OpenAI, offered a guarantee of up to $105 billion for an OpenAI data centre in Ohio, put $10 billion into Anthropic, $2 billion into CoreWeave and $3 billion into Meta’s share sale. Its maximum exposure under customer guarantees is $108.5 billion, and it has stretched payment terms for some clients to as long as a year. Australia’s central bank and the Bank of England have both flagged these arrangements as a pocket of higher risk, because if a customer such as OpenAI cannot pay, Nvidia loses twice: the sale and the money it lent.

3. The profits have not arrived, and the evidence is piling up

AI is generating real revenue. Microsoft’s Azure grew 48 percent, and Google Cloud has a $561 billion backlog. The problem is scale and timing: cloud revenue is growing in the tens of billions while capex is growing in the hundreds of billions, and the businesses buying all that AI are struggling to show it pays.

MIT’s Project NANDA study found that 95 percent of enterprise generative AI pilots produced no measurable profit-and-loss impact within six months.

PwC’s 2026 survey of 4,454 CEOs across 95 countries found 56 percent reported no significant financial benefit from AI.

McKinsey’s 2026 State of AI survey found fewer than 20 percent of AI pilots make it into enterprise-scale production.

BCG’s 2026 survey of 1,800 executives found only 26 percent of companies had generated meaningful financial value from AI.

KPMG’s Q1 2026 survey of 2,110 C-suite leaders found the average enterprise AI budget was $186 million, yet only 8 percent reported tangible returns.

S&P Global found 42 percent of companies abandoned most of their AI projects in 2025, more than double the previous year.

Reading the chart: the surveys disagree on the exact number because they ask different questions, but none of them gets close to half. That consensus is what shook investors.

These are the customers of the customers. If businesses cannot show a return on the AI tools they buy, they eventually buy fewer of them, and the whole chain from Nvidia to the data centre to the cloud provider feels it.

4. The small players are drowning in debt

Below the giants sits a layer of “neoclouds”, companies that borrowed money to buy Nvidia chips and rent them out as computing power. They are the most exposed part of the AI economy because they have the debt without the cash-rich core business to fall back on.

CoreWeave, backed by Nvidia, carried $35.6 billion of debt at the end of June 2026 and total liabilities of about $72 billion. In its latest quarter, it paid $640 million in net interest on $2.575 billion of revenue, about 25 cents of every dollar of sales, and its operating income did not cover its interest bill. Its bonds fell to distressed levels with yields near 15 percent, its credit default swaps widened, and the stock dropped 36 to 38 percent in October. Its market value has fallen to about $31 billion from a peak near $90 billion. About $20.7 billion of debt comes due by 2030.

Nebius ($8.55 billion of debt) fell about 33 percent in October and IREN ($7.59 billion of debt) about 39 percent, even though neither carries CoreWeave’s specific problem. Fear spread by association.

Gartner has warned that most neoclouds may not survive to 2030. On 25 October, Elon Musk said debt markets had shut off funding for firms without substantial revenue outside AI data centres. Short sellers have made roughly $6 billion in paper gains betting against these stocks since the start of October, according to Reuters.

Reading the chart: the same month, the same fear, but the companies carrying the debt fell six to seven times further than the index. Leverage decides who gets hurt first.

The AI labs at the top of the chain have the same shape of problem at a larger scale. OpenAI reported revenue of $6.7 billion in the April to June 2026 quarter and an operating loss of $12.3 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal, which means it spent close to $3 for every $1 it earned. It burned $3.7 billion of cash in the first quarter on $5.7 billion of revenue, lost $20.9 billion at the operating level in 2025, has signed long-term compute commitments of more than $665 billion, and does not expect positive cash flow before 2030. It still raised $110 billion in February 2026 at a $730 billion valuation. Not every lab is in the same position (Anthropic reported an operating profit in the same quarter, per the Journal), but the biggest spender in the industry is losing more money the faster it grows.

5. Why investors are holding back

Companies spend more on AI than they earn, so they borrow.

Bond investors see each quarter’s spending plan revised upward and cannot tell how much more debt is coming, so they demand higher yields.

US inflation rises, and the Federal Reserve signals a December rate hike, which makes every one of those loans more expensive.

The companies buying AI tools cannot show returns, so the revenue that was supposed to repay the loans looks further away.

Equity investors, who are paid last if anything goes wrong, decide to sell first. Alphabet’s $500 billion drop, Intel’s 29 percent fall and CoreWeave’s 38 percent slide are the same decision made at three different points in the chain.

The short version: This was not a crash in AI demand. It does not show up as an expense immediately, but it drains cash today in the hope of profits tomorrow. Together, these four companies are expected to spend roughly $730 billion on capex in 2026, up 78 percent from about $410 billion in 2025, and Goldman Sachs expects the figure to approach $1.14 trillion in 2027.

How they plan to make it pay off

Prove the demand is real. Google points to a $561 billion cloud backlog, which means business customers have already signed up for services it has not yet delivered. Microsoft says customer demand is greater than the capacity it can build. If those claims hold, today’s spending becomes tomorrow’s revenue.

Spend smarter, not just bigger. Microsoft says engineering improvements let it serve more customers from the same hardware, which raises the return on every dollar of capex.

Protect the cash. Microsoft has promised to stay free-cash-flow positive. Meta is raising outside money rather than draining its own. Amazon and Alphabet are the ones burning cash, which is why their shares fell hardest.

Keep the core business humming. Google Search queries are growing at their fastest pace in five years, Meta’s ad machine grew 26 percent, and Amazon’s retail and Prime businesses still throw off profit. AI spending is being funded by businesses that already work.

Wait for the chips. Both Microsoft and Alphabet actually spent less than analysts expected this quarter because GPU and data-centre deliveries were delayed into early 2027. Supply, not courage, is the constraint.

The honest summary: investors are no longer paying for ambition. They want evidence that AI revenue is catching up with AI spending, and Microsoft is the only one of the four that convinced them this quarter.

Sources: Yahoo Finance, 30 Oct 2026, CNBC on Alphabet Q3 2026, CNBC on Microsoft and Google capex, 29 Oct 2026, Fortune on Meta Q3 2026, The Tribune on Microsoft results, Value Add VC capex tracker

Effect on The Indian Stock Market

Here is a fact that will surprise anyone who only reads global headlines: the Indian stock market went up on Friday. While Wall Street was having its worst day since June, the Sensex gained 308.49 points (0.42 percent) to close at 74,459.53, and the Nifty 50 rose 116.35 points (0.51 percent) to 23,053.10, its second straight day of gains.

Why India did not crash on Friday

Timing. Indian markets close at 3:30 pm IST. The sharpest US selling happened hours later, in New York’s afternoon. Monday, 2 November, is the first real test.

India had already corrected. The Nifty fell 6.1 percent in September alone, and both benchmarks had two straight losing months before October. The Nifty is roughly 2,000 points below where it traded a year ago. In other words, India took its medicine early.

Domestic money is absorbing foreign selling. Foreign institutional investors sold a net Rs 48,760 crore of Indian shares in October, including Rs 12,944 crore on a single day (8 October). Domestic institutions, led by mutual funds flush with SIP money, bought a net Rs 63,038 crore over the same period.

IT and pharma led the rebound. The Nifty IT index jumped about 2.3 percent on Friday, with Infosys, Wipro and HCL Technologies among the top gainers, and the Nifty Pharma index hit a record high.

Where the pain is showing

Mid and small caps are bleeding. On the same Friday, the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.93 percent, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 1.85 percent. The rally is narrow. If you hold small-cap funds, your portfolio probably did not go up.

Banks lagged. The Nifty Bank index slipped 223 points to 54,687.

The rupee is near record lows. The currency hit its second-weakest close ever at 96.78 per dollar on 7 October and was trading around 95 at the end of the month. A weak rupee makes imported oil, electronics and foreign education more expensive.

Oil above $100 hurts India more than almost anyone. India imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil. Brent at $112 to $115 widens the trade deficit, feeds inflation and pressures the rupee further.

The two questions for next week

Will Indian IT stocks hold? Infosys, TCS, Wipro and HCL earn most of their revenue from US clients. If American companies trim technology budgets in 2027 to fund AI, Indian IT services could feel it. Friday’s rally bets that AI spending will create more services work, not less. Nobody knows yet.

Will FII selling accelerate? When US investors lose money at home, they often sell emerging-market holdings to raise cash. October’s Rs 48,760 crore outflow could grow in November if the US selloff continues.

India is not immune. It is insulated, partly by its own earlier correction and partly by a wall of domestic retail money. That insulation has limits.

Sources: HDFC Sky market close report, 30 Oct 2026, Business Standard, 30 Oct 2026, CNBC TV18 via TradingView, 30 Oct 2026, NiftyTrader FII and DII data, Business Standard on the rupee, 7 Oct 2026, ETV Bharat on the rupee, 23 Oct 2026

How Students, Freshers & Career Switchers Can Benefit From The Crisis

A market crash transfers money from people who panic to people who understand what they are looking at. You do not need capital to be in the second group. You need skills. Here is how to come out of this period ahead, whether you have Rs 500 to invest or nothing at all.

Learn to read the numbers

Every headline this week came down to a handful of accounting terms. Alphabet fell because of negative free cash flow. Amazon fell because capex outran operating cash. Intel fell because of revenue guidance. Meta’s profit was cut by a legal provision. If those words are fuzzy to you, that is the gap to close first.

Free cash flow: the cash a business has left after paying for its operations and its long-term investments. Negative free cash flow means the company is spending more than it earns.

Capex: spending on long-term assets like data centres and machinery.

Guidance: a company’s own forecast for the next quarter or year. Stocks move more on guidance than on past results.

P/E ratio: share price divided by earnings per share. China’s STAR50 at 250 times earnings versus the Nasdaq 100 at 30 is the whole story of the China crash in one number.

These are the concepts taught in any serious accounting, financial analysis, or financial modelling course. People who can explain them to a manager are the people managers keep.

Understand which jobs get busier in a downturn

When money is easy, companies hire for growth. When money is tight, they hire for control. Finance and accounting teams typically get busier, not quieter, when markets fall, because every rupee of cost now needs justifying and every forecast needs rebuilding. Roles that tend to matter more in this environment include:

Cost and management accounting

Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) and budgeting

GST, income tax and statutory compliance

Audit, internal controls and risk

Accounts payable, receivable and treasury (cash is king when cash is scarce)

Finance data and reporting skills: advanced Excel, Tally, SAP, Power BI

None of these depend on a stock index going up. They depend on businesses needing to count, control, and report money, which they need more in bad times than in good.

If you have small savings, learn the discipline now

This is education, not investment advice. Markets can fall further, and you should consult a SEBI-registered adviser before investing.

Do not borrow to invest. This week’s gold crash was driven partly by traders selling gold to meet margin calls on borrowed money. Leverage turns a dip into a disaster.

Understand what a SIP actually does. A systematic investment plan invests a fixed amount every month. When prices fall, the same money buys more units. This is called rupee-cost averaging, and it is why domestic Indian investors bought Rs 63,038 crore of shares in October while foreigners sold.

Build an emergency fund first. Three to six months of expenses in a savings account or liquid fund come before any equity investment. People who have one never have to sell at the bottom.

Diversification is not optional. This week proved that gold, silver, Bitcoin, and stocks can all fall together. Spreading money across asset classes, and across time, is the only protection that has consistently worked.

Stay away from F&O and intraday trading. SEBI’s own studies have repeatedly found that the large majority of retail derivatives traders lose money. A crash is the worst time to learn this the hard way.

Follow the money flows, not the fear

Money did not disappear this week. It moved: out of AI chip stocks into oil, bonds, and the dollar; out of foreign hands into Indian mutual funds; out of speculative Chinese AI names into Hong Kong value stocks. Learning to track where money goes, rather than reacting to where it was, is the single most valuable habit a finance professional can build. China’s AI stocks broke first. Wall Street wobbled next. Gold failed its safe-haven exam. India held up, but on a narrow set of stocks and a wall of domestic money that will not hold forever.

None of this is in your control. What is in your control is whether you understand it. The person who can look at Amazon’s negative $42 billion free cash flow and explain what it means to a room will always have a job, in a bull market or a bear one. The person who can only repeat the headline will not.

If you want to learn to read a balance sheet, a cash-flow statement and a GST return the way analysts read them this week, ICA Edu Skills’ job-oriented accounting, taxation and financial analysis programmes teach exactly these skills through hands-on practice, industry software and placement assistance. Talk to a counsellor and find out which programme fits where you are starting from.

The market will recover, or it will fall further. Either way, the people who understand money will be the ones hired to manage it.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the AI bubble bursting in 2026?

In China, by most measures, yes: the STAR50 index of AI and chip stocks fell about 40 percent from its July peak, erasing roughly $480 billion. In the US, the Nasdaq is about 7.8 percent below its 6 October record, which is a correction, not a burst bubble. Investors are now demanding proof that AI spending turns into profit.

2. Why did the stock market crash in October 2026?

Disappointing Big Tech results triggered it. Alphabet and Amazon missed estimates while spending record sums on AI, Intel’s weak outlook sank its stock 29 percent, and chip shares followed. Rising inflation, expectations of a US Fed rate hike in December,r and oil above $100 a barrel added to the pressure.

3. Why did gold fall during the stock market crash?

Three reasons. Traders sold gold to cover losses and margin calls elsewhere. Strong US growth and higher inflation raised bets on interest-rate hikes, which hurt gold because it pays no interest. And oil and the US dollar took over the safe-haven role. Gold fell to about $3,880 an ounce, a one-year low, and silver dropped below $50.

4. How does the US stock market crash affect the Indian stock market?

Indirectly, through foreign selling, a weaker rupee,e and the US clients of Indian IT firms. Foreign investors sold a net Rs 48,760 crore of Indian shares in October, but domestic investors bought Rs 63,038 crore, so the Sensex and Nifty rose on 30 October. Mid caps, small caps and the rupee remain under pressure.

5. Should I invest in stocks during a market crash?

Only with money you will not need for years, never with borrowed money, and ideally through a monthly SIP that buys more units as prices fall. Build an emergency fund first and avoid derivatives. This is general education, not investment advice. A SEBI-registered adviser can guide you on your specific situation.

Summary The stock market crash of October 2026 was triggered by fears that Big Tech’s AI spending will not pay off.
